Mahjanigans / Nine Gates Exhibition Mahjong League Rules

  • 2 Ranks: A-Rank and B-Rank. A rank is ~30% of total league size
  • League is scored every calendar month.
  • The first five League games you play in a month ‘count’.
  • You cannot play two consecutive League games with more than two of the same people.
  • Players should do their best to play players withing their own rank (first priority), get their four games completed (second priority) and as many different people as possible (third priority).
  • Should there be unfilled players during the last week of the league, they may play other players of their same rank. The others do not score for this match, but must do their best in good faith.
  • Players should make a good-faith effort to facilitate play: shuffling the tiles thoroughly (flipping face-up tiles back down / not cupping tiles in hands), no cheating / colluding, playing promptly, allowing other players a moment to call tiles before drawing, no slow-playing, and so on. If you cannot play promptly with a mixed hand, you are asked to organize your hand.
  • At the end of each month, the bottom 20% scorers of the A-Rank (rounded up) move down to B-Rank. The same number of players at the top of B-Rank move up to A-Rank.
  • Game timer is 10/30 seconds – this need not be strictly enforced, but players should take care to play promptly, but also make sure others have a second to call any tile discarded.
  • Missed games cost -5 per game per game (- 5 for one, -10 each for two, -15 each for three, -20 each for four, -25 each for five).
  • Months that have an RIT Quarter End continue into next month (Example: Nov-Dec is a single League month).
  • At the beginning of each game, whoever is selected to be East for the first round becomes responsible for correctly filling out the score sheet for the game. Score sheets are turned in to EvilTaxi on Saturdays at Hammergirl during League hours.
  • League sheet can be found here. What needs to be recorded: Unique player name, final raw score (in points), time / date of game start, initial ESWN placing, each hand name (East 1, South 2 Bonus 2, etc) points paid in/out in each hand by player, yaku list and/or draw reason.

SCORING

  • Games are East-South, 25,000 points.
  • Chombos: false reach, illegal kan post-reach, incorrect Ron, 5+ tile wall/hand/opponent hand expose, calling tiles after your hand is declared dead. Chombo must be called by 2+ players.
  • Dead Hand: Incorrect kan/pon/chi, too long, too short, exposing 2+ tiles from own hand, exposing any tiles from wall/opponent’s hand. Dead Hand must be agreed upon by 2+ players.
  • Hands start at the break of the dead wall.
  • Ending Uma is determined by number of players over 30,000 points:
    #>30k \ Place 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
    0 +8 +4 -4 -8
    1 +12 -1 -3 -8
    2 +8 +4 -4 -8
    3 +8 +3 +1 -12
  • Final score it rounded to the nearest thousand (500 rounds up), and 30k is subtracted. Each thousand is one point (42000=+12, 29000=-1, etc). In case of ties, uma are averaged.
  • If you are forced to play opponents below you in rank, your score is lowered 20% per each lower-ranked player at the table, rounded down. Example 1: at a table where you get +22 with two lower-ranked players, your score is +13 (22 minus 8.8, rounded down). Example 2: at the same table, you get -10. you get -14 (-10 minus 4).
