Placement Tournament over!

After two days of East-only games, we have our initial placements for the inaugural Hammergirl Anime/Nine Gates Mahjong League!

McMasters has the full results posted here. As for me… I had a mediocre third game, but my first two were good enough to cement my position.

Tourney Day 2 COMPLETE

Day 2 is well on its way! The games so far have produced the following results:

Shanks: +12
Actn: +1
EvilTaxi: -4
Idaho: -7
McMasters: -7
Jerral: -10
Catboy: -28

McMasters had the following to say:
“After a series of quick hands and a pair wait toitoi triple yakuhai that didn’t catch (boooo), I get a -7, leaving me at, surprise surprise, +11. Figures.”

Stay tuned for more updates as the day progresses! I’ll try to update as often as possible, but typing on an iPod Touch is not as easy as on a laptop (duh).

UPDATE: Final results!

Tourney Day 1 (with ACTION SHOT)

Day 1 was really hectic, with 22 people showing up to attempt to place in the League’s first ‘Top 8 A Rank’ division. It looks like the cut is going to be three games, and with most people having two completed, the players are starting to group up.

League Placement starts tomorrow!

So, tomorrow night starts the league! Last time I was at their club, I saw four tables playing, so that’s 16, and I know there are about 10 regulars at the store, so this could be pretty awesome, I’ll tell you what.

The placement tourney is kinda slapdash, as we only have one week to get people into an A-Class or B-Class, so what I’ve come up with is this:

Tile shortcuts when posting

To type a tile in, use left-bracket+tile-name+right-bracket. add a lowercase L to the end of the tile name if you want the tile to be sideways. Lowercase X for a tile back.

Suit tiles are number+m, p, or s (man, pin, sou).

Winds are n,e,s, and w, and dragons are h (for the white – ‘haku’), g, and r.

Examples! Replace the parantheses with square brackets.

(1m) =

(1ml)(2m)(3m) =

(x)(n)(n)(x)=

First Post

Hey, everyone, the blog is now open. Yay.

I decided to open this blog up because of the large amount of mahjong discussion that takes place at the store (Hammergirl Anime in Rochester, NY, an anime store), and now that the nearby college (RIT) has a great club too, why not run a league – and why not run a site, too? There’s a lot less discussion in English about mahjong than you’d think online, and although the blogs that do are excellent (I’m a big fan of osamuko), one more shouldn’t be too bad.

So, without further ado, an introduction. I start playing Mahjong in college in the mid 90′s, against players that A: would only play for money and B:  wouldn’t teach you the rules. -_- Trial by fire, I guess. after college, I stopped, what with nobody to play, and ended up opening an anime store. I stopped by the RIT Anime Club to make some announcements, and I heard the shuffling of tiles (a sound I hadn’t heard for ten years) – lo and behold, there was a fledgling mahjong club starting up at RIT@ With that, the rise of mahjong anime, and a few calls to some old friends, we were ready to go.

Hopefully, this blog will help people get over that ‘step 2: ????’ hurdle that I see so often in players – they learn to play, get some simple strategy in them, but then don’t have strong players to play with, and don’t have strong enough Japanese-reading ability to ‘go to the source’, so they languish at the 2-Dan level on Tenhou forever.

Maybe we can change that. :)

Okay, now to get a post up on how to use the tile shortcuts
